The Spanish production of coated carrboard packages strong> reached 342,347 tonnes in 2016, an increase of 2.5% over the previous year. In the same way, the turnover of the sector increased by 2.7% from 666 million euros in 2015 to 684 million euros in 2015, according to ASPACK (Spanish Association of Manufacturers of Packaging, Packaging and Cardboard Processing). Similarly, the number of workers employed increased by 1.2% to 4,300, while the number of companies operating in this area remained stable in relation to the previous two years, as 86% are concentrated in Catalonia, 22% in Valencia and 16% in Madrid.
The survey published by ASPACK also reveals the trend of the sector in Europe. According to data from ECMA (European Cardboard Makers Association), 49% of cardboard packages sold in Europe went to the food sector and 51% went to other sectors, according to figures that reflect the reality of the current sector. The analysis of profitability of the sector carried out in the survey shows great differences in structure, turnover and economic results. Thus, 74% of companies in the sector bill between 1 and 10 million euros.
60% of the invoicing of the sector is carried out by 20% of the companies, this means that there is a tendency to concentrate in the sector that is growing. In terms of employment, 68% of the turnover in the sector is made by companies with more than 50 workers and 47% by companies with more than 100 employees. Companies with fewer than 10 employees barely account for 2% of the sector's sales.
Finally, in relation to results, 33% of companies have a profit lower than 2% of their turnover; 28%, between 2% and 5%; 15%, between 5% and 10%; and 6%, more than 10% of profit; While 19% reported negative results, large companies own a 45% market share, the medium ones, 43% of it, and the small ones the remaining 12%.
